Feb 25 Household tax protests in Dublin

Date:

Saturday 25th Feb. saw many Household Tax demonstrations held across Dublin and a mass leafletting in the city centre. This was part of the nationwide day of action that saw around 40 protests take place. We give some reports here from WSM members who were at some of the protests around Dublin.

Dublin 7
Campaigners from Cabra, Stoneybatter and parts of Dublin central gathered at St Peters church in Phibsboro at midday before holding pickets at local TD's offices. Some 70 campaigners took part in the protest carrying placards that read 'refuse to be ripped off', 'Tax the greedy not the needy', 'Together we can win' 'Tax the rich not the family home' and 'Not our debt we won't pay.' We started off at Labour TD Joe Costello's office before marching around the corner to Fine Gael TD Pascal Donohoe. The pickets followed on from local meetings in many parts of the area are door to door distribution of the campaign newsletter and reply to the government leaflet.

City Centre leafleting
About 30 people handed out copies of the CAHWT's latest newsletter for 3 hours at the GPO on Saturday, wearing high viz vests for increased effect! Response from the public was good and RTE and some of the Dublin based radio stations were in attendance.

Dun Laoghaire
About a dozen people held a street stall and leafleting session on Saturday afternoon in Dun Laoghaire as part of the national day of action. There was a generally positive repsonse from members of the public with a great many people saying they had no intention of paying. The Campaign will hold a public meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghire on Tuesday 28th February at 8pm. From this meeting the Campaign will have established a base of activists in all parts of Dun Laoghaire and will hold regular organisers' meetings to plan the future direction of the campaign in the area.
