Belfast anarchists picket in solidarity with anarchist hunger striker

Date:

Members from the Belfast branch of the Workers Solidarity Movement in conjunction with Anarchist Black Cross will be holding a picket to highlight the case of political prisoner Amadeu Casellas outside Belfast City Hall this Monday 8th September at 5.30.

Contrary to Spanish law, which limits prison sentences to 20 years, Amadeu has been in prison for 22 years, making him the longest serving prisoner in Catalonia.

“We are organising this protest in solidarity with Amadeu and his continued political persecution and incarceration by the Spanish state because of his anarchist political beliefs and his involvement in collective prison struggles,” a WSM Spokesperson Michael McGovern added.

“This is part of the global neo-liberal offensive and state repression in criminalising any form of opposition and resistance to the world order.”

Furthermore, “we would call upon anyone who believes in freedom and justice to attend, and demand the immediate release of Amadeu Casellas and other political prisoners.”

From La Vanguardia, a Spanish newspaper:

"Casellas was 14 years old in 1973 and was working in a factory in Balenya when he discovered anarchism. He believed in armed struggle, and the neccesity of revolution to change things, even today, when he has turned 45 years and is convinced that guns don't fix anything, he considers anarchism, still to be the definite solution.”
