A number of WSM members attended the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) commemoration of Land Day – March 30th which has become a symbolic day of support both in Palestine and throughout the world. This marks the day when strikes were organised in many Palestinian towns in Israel back in 1976 as a reaction to the expropriation of more land by that aggressor state.

34 years later – not a lot has changed and that policy ‘continues unabated today’ said Freda Hughes the IPSC spokesperson to a crowd of about 40 people who gathered on a cold wet evening outside the GPO to commemorate this day.

The rally was also addressed by two renowned human rights activists and campaigners who’ve worked in Palestine, Caoimhe Butterly and Ewa Jasiewicz who worked in the ambulance service in Gaza.

The commemoration had a specific local dimension to it as there is an upcoming motion in front of Dublin City Council (12th April) which calls on the city manager to not have any renewed deals with Veolia (the company that runs the Luas system) as they are being contracted by the Israeli state for a similar operation into Palestine.

There is a fuller report with videos at the IPSC site.
