WSM banner from the invasion of Lebanon re-used Jan 3rd 2008

Along with thousands of others WSM members have been taking part in protests in Dublin, Cork and Belfast against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. Here we present a collection of writings we have published on Palestine as well as articles by our members published elsewhere and useful articles our members have helped get re-published.

All this helps put into context our participation in the protests as well as past activity which has included visits to Palestine by WSM members and helping to tour and fundraisers for the Israeli anarchist organisation 'Anarchists Against the Wall'.

Meet the new boss

The victory of Obama in the US presidential elections, echoed all over the world through the mass media, tried to convince us that the single most relevant event in 2 millions of years of human existence had just happened.

In the meantime, delirious public opinion, all over the world, celebrated Obama’s victory in a way that they would not have done were it a new government in their own countries – something barely surprising, if we take into account that decisions taken by the rulers of Washington DC entail a heavy load of consequences carried on the shoulders of millions of people across the five continents.

It's happened before

The follow up to Paul Bowman's 'Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction' charts the story of the historical development of the regime of global financial order under US hegemony.

It examines how the centre of capital accumulation shifted from Europe to the US in the first half of the twentieth century, and how following World War II the global financial order became centred around the US through the Bretton Woods system.

It then explores how the Bretton Woods System was undermined, concentrating as much on the role of workers’ militancy as on the role of the Eurodollars market. After considering the response to the crisis of Bretton Woods, it looks at the Clinton boom bringing us up to the current situation of the US’s current heavy dependence on foreign borrowing.

Just around the corner

Written months before the banking crash of the Autumn of 2008 this is the first part of a series of articles investigating the capitalist financial markets from a critical perspective.

It explains in some detail what the various financial instruments are that were to be blamed for the crash and what implication they have for class struggle.

With such a large topic it is tricky finding a route into the subject and a plan of enquiry. The chosen road is to start with a look at the financial markets, particularly focusing on the mechanics of some of the instruments that have led to a momentous transformation of the workings of global financial markets in the most recent decades.
