Cork: Spring Talks Series at Solidarity Books, every Tuesday! at 8pm, starts 5th April

WSM Cork today announced that Solidarity Books, of 43 Douglas Street, will host a series of discussions on rights, freedoms, and radical history every other Tuesday at 8pm starting on 5th April and ending on 17th May 2011.  The talks will examine issues of human rights and radical history in Ireland and aim to cover ideas and events not taught in school.

Cork: Film Night at Solidarity Books: Inside Job, Wednesday 30th March, 8pm

Inside Job is a 2010 documentary film about the financial crisis of 2007-2010 directed by Charles H. Ferguson. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2010. The film won anAcademy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2011.

International Women's Day 2011 Celebrations in Cork

'Celebrate Revolutionary Women' banner on display outside Solidarity BooksTuesday March 8th was International Women's Day, and to celebrate it Cork WSM and several other organisations in the city organised a number of events in various locations. Ahead of the day on Saturday and Sunday, the Cork Sexual Violence Centre in Camden Quay and the Women's Studies Department of UCC respectively held celebratory events. On the day itself, events marking it were held around the city.

Clarion hotel in Cork and Davenport in Dublin: Fighting for solidarity the key

TClarion Hotel in Corkhe attack on workers at the Davenport Hotel in Dublin had highlighted the greed and bullying in the hotel business.  A similar case to that at the Davenport has come to light here in Cork.  But so far fear has ruled the day.

The Clarion describes itself as one of “Cork’s premier 4 Star City Centre Hotels”.  Although it’s well able to charge for its rooms it cannot find its way to granting its workers a 29 cents  per hour pay rise.

The Independent Workers Union (Cork Branch) has launched a series of posters that have been displayed on poles around Cork city. The posters raise five demands from the unions manifesto of resistance.
